An interview with Simon Kuper about his new book Why England Lose and other curious football phenomena explainedSounds like a good read. Apparently it has a Moneyball feel to it.

English turn to booze on holidayObvious headline, I suppose, but this is real news: 70% of the 3,500 adults questioned by the Department of Health said they plan to make September the "new January"...Just wait until November, though, because it will be the new April which was already the new October. Throw away your calendars, they're useless.

Hey they have made a film of it, starring Judy Dench, not as the romantic lead I hasten to add. Was it the stunning Cate Blanchett as the lead? I lose track. Notes On A Scandal, just looked it up, good film, well worth a bit of your time.

The Staffordshire HoardFound earlier this year, about 30 miles from where I live. I knew I should have taken up metal detectoring.

Yeah, sure, change the subject. You just want to teach my 6th form English class in the summer term when the midriffs start appearing, I know.

Our school and local education authority has a policy that there should be no direct cyber contact outside the official school systems - but, quite frankly, they're often shite and don't work - servers crash, permissions are wrongly set; the usual ICT madness. I have created an e-mail address that I only use for pupils' work - they e-mail it to me, I mark it, I return it - and I let parents know about it. It works and it's quite public, so it's completely transparent. If you look at my Facebook, I've got loads of ex-pupils as contacts - it's good to see what they're doing with their lives - I don't see anything wrong with that. They'll pass polite conversation, or just ignore me, because they want to see the old school show photos I've uploaded with them on and they can only get to see them by adding me. It's also a bit different for me, because, in my own limited way, being in a band that's got quite a bit of local notoriety, the pupils can find me - and the other teachers in the band - online, quite easily. That usually works in our favour, especially when they see where we've been and played, because it gives us a bit of street cred and mystique which is something which always helps in class control. A tricky subject, but there are lines and there are lots of places where they get blurred, but ultimately there are lines of trust that should not be crossed - and that's not just a teacher thing, in my eyes. The private school thing makes this a bit more explainable - in the private sector, there's far greater expectation that teachers are paid servants who'll turn up at your house to do extra tuition, or take your children away camping or swimming at the weekend - so the risk of artificial - or actual - intimacy, is greater. Moral - don't send your kids to a private school.
