Caught Dave Alvin and the Guilty Women last night at the Old Town School. A group called the Spares opened, and were much better than your garden-variety opening act. This was the Guilty Women's second gig with Dave (and the first since October), and it showed. The players are outstanding, but they are definitely still finding their way as a live band, reading his cues, etc. It didn't help that singer Christy McWilson didn't know the lyrics to many of the songs, or that her and Amy Farris seemed to be battling for #1 sidekick. Dave actually became visibly annoyed after about the fourth time Amy Farris jumped in with her fiddle when he was about to solo.
Overall, though, it was an excellent show, and the material from their upcoming record was great. I'm guessing with a few more shows under their belt, things will tighten up and the band will kick some major ass.

Thanks, Antoine. I see there's a show in NYC in July. And I was a fan of McWilson since The Picketts though I never saw them live.

Mogwai's coming to town. Has anyone here seen them? Ask TXS Holdem'. I think he digs them. I've never heard their music.

Well I saw them a fair while back in a small pub in Glasgow, pretty damned intense. Never bought any of their albums because I just can't see me casualy listening to it but as a live thing.... intense. So if that's the mood you're in on the night, go, you'll love it. And speaking as someone who's gotten laid to the soundtrack of the Drive by Truckers, I can say with almost certainty that Mogwai aren't date music.

...Alejandro Escovedo in a tiny, tiny back room of a pub in Nottingham on May 29th... ;D ;D Somehow that makes me envision Alejandro walking up to you in a seedy joint, opening his leather jacket and asking, "Hey buddy, wanna buy a watch?"

Oy vey! Coming soon (June?) ... Three Girls and their Buddy ... so I peeked in to see who this was ... assuming Buddy to be Julie's hubby ... and it's Emmylou, Patty Griffin and Shawn Colvin ... plus Buddy and his many guitars. Not sure if my heart can stand such marvels all at one time. Trust Buddy's healing from his heart work.....

...Alejandro Escovedo in a tiny, tiny back room of a pub in Nottingham on May 29th... ;D ;D See if you can get him to tell his story about what inspired "Paradise" ... a sobering tale if ever there was one. Some friends bought Gravity and couldn't get past that song (which is too bad because "One More Time" is a marvel of high speed intensity).
