Britain's Favorite Song: 'A Whiter Shade Of Pale'Procol Harum's psychedelic classic "A Whiter Shade of Pale" has just been named Britain's most-played song in public places in the last 75 years, beating out Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "All I Have to Do Is Dream" by The Everly Brothers. The song spent six weeks at the top of the charts when it was released in 1967. Last year, it caused an angry lawsuit over royalties involving its haunting and memorable organ solo. There's even a new incarnation of the song by British singer Paul Potts, who won 2007's reality talent show Britain's Got Talent. Potts' new CD is full of covers of famous pop tunes, translated into Italian. He sings an adaptation called "Senza Luce," or "Without Light." It's a song which raises the question: Do the lyrics possibly make any less sense in Italian than they do in English?

Mrs Gaskell's house in Manchester is in a well-dodgy area - the Manchester International club was just up the road in the 80s and early 90s and you would just pray that your car was still there and in one piece when you exited the venue(s).

From the Daily Telegraph's letters page yesterday: "Don’t skip the fandango SIR – I read your report (April 14) that the two most-heard songs in public are A Whiter Shade of Pale and Bohemian Rhapsody and mentioned it to a friend, who immediately pointed out that both songs contain the word fandango. Could this be the elusive secret of writing a guaranteed hit? John Benson Harpenden, Hertfordshire "

From the Telegraph letters page:
Scottish time?
SIR – The Scots apart, it is generally agreed that a switch to Central European Time would be of enormous benefit to Britain. Since Scotland is an autonomous nation, cannot its Parliament decide to opt out and remain on GMT?

I hope it's Celtic - Gordon Strachan is a man who's done well on relatively poor resources.
And we all hope that Newcastle go down....I can remember when they were in the old 3rd division and played Port Vale - they were an unsporting, big-headed bunch and I've never forgiven them.

I don't have much to go on but from what I can tell I agree with your assessment of them as big-headed and unsporting. Enjoy the Championship!

Could be the colonist in me, but I have a hard time supressing the Schandenfreude England humiliated by Broad's last-ball blunderAnd what is 20/20 cricket, not that I know what the other forms are. Am willing to learn, at least for cocktail party purposes.

Am willing to learn, at least for cocktail party purposes. 20/20 cricket is where each side gets 20 overs and do without the niceties of the game - it's just thrash and burn. Good fun, therefore, but hated by 5 day test match loving purists.
