Anyone want to buy 2 Robbie Fulks tickets?(Just kidding, or am I?)
"While Friday the 13th is universally considered a day of bad luck, in fact it just turned out to be Houston's lucky day. This afternoon Miller Outdoor Theatre announced a free show for that date starring none other than Alejandro Escovedo and the Sensitive Boys plus Houston's own favorite vatos, Los Skarnales.
Escovedo, who was No Depression magazine's Artist of the Decade from 1995-2005, coinciding with the magazine's ten year anniversary, has been rocking hard since recovering from a bout with Hepatitis C a few years back.
His last two albums have been supported by guitar god Chuck Prophet and have been greatly admired by a wide spectrum of music critics. His last Houston show was to a small but appreciative crowd at House of Blues' Bronze Peacock Room in March.
Perennial local faves Los Skarnales are pushing hard with their latest album, Dale Shine, an album that finds them stretching beyond their ska base into rockabilly and funk.
Pairing them with the explosive Escovedo seems like a dynamic combination and a genius booking move on short notice by the Miller folks. Shows at the park are always free and open to the general public.
8:00 p.m., Friday, May 13, Miller Outdoor Theatre, 6000 Hermann Park Dr., 281-373-3386." - Houston Press

Hi all. Is there likely to be a Hideout show on Monday the 4th of July? Summerfest will be dark so I was thinking of making the trek.

Dammit. Can't make Ithaca OR Passim.
....I was going to say I have to inform RF of my blackout dates, but he'd assume they were all of them.

The host of Oak Tree House Concerts tells me he has booked Robbie (along with a band of two, identities unknown) for an outdoor house concert on May 20th. It's an afternoon show at 4:00. They are located in Barnhart, Missouri, which is just south of St. Louis. Sounds like fun! www.oaktreeconcerts.com/

Robbie will be at the Freight and Salvage in Berkeley CA on Sunday October 14. (I was there to take a guitar workshop with Sylvia Herold and said to the desk people, "Hey, why don't you guys have Robbie Fulks back again?" They said, "I think we just booked him -- yeah, here it is.")

Robbie and the Bottle Rockets - Sept. 8 at Catch-22 in Springfield, IL. How was the show? It was a wonderful show, as expected - just Robbie and his (fairly new) guitar. He played all the hits along with "Bluebirds Are Singing For Me" and a Carter Stanley song, the name of which escapes me. His off-the-cuff remarks and improvised songs were some of the highlights. He did a song about "Black Bart" who was supplying him with Goose Island 312 beer; a snippet of the Bottle Rockets' "Indianapolis," stating it was about time someone wrote a song about "that hellhole;" and we sang "Happy Birthday" to "smoking Tammy" who was outside smoking with her friends at the time.* Robbie is going to be in St. Louis at Off Broadway this weekend with Fred Eaglesmith's Route 66 Wingding Across America.** The Bottle Rockets put on a fine performance. I especially enjoyed the "virtual hits" portion of the show, when we pretended to be in a stadium and they rolled through all their songs that should have been hits. * This is a Chuck Klosterman-type footnote where the footnote is longer than the whole article. I find myself more and more irritated going to club shows these days. You (or at least I) figure at club shows, people show up because they're interested in the performer. That's not necessarily so. It seems a large number of people get an advanced ticket or pay the cover charge to socialize with their friends, walk back and forth from the bar (at least they're getting some exercise), or piss around with their phones. People talked nonstop during Robbie's entire set. How can you be so excited to see Robbie play and then go outside a half-dozen times during his set to smoke? And whatever happened to having a few drinks during the evening? Why do you have to spend a week's pay on alcohol and walk in front of me 36 times throughout the evening to have a good time? And it's one thing when a dozen people have their phones in the air taking pictures or crappy videos to post on YouTube, but why sit and dick around with your face in your phone when you paid to get in to the show? Isn't it cheaper to play around on Facebook at home for free? Sometimes I wonder if I can manage to stick it out with the rest of humanity "before the whole shithouse goes up in flames."*** ** Not the actual name of the tour. *** www.youtube.com/watch?v=YSlXjrxqDOE

Oh man...you are so right about the "club scene". Maybe we've been spoiled by the house concerts, where everyone is paying attention to the music. Some of the people acting like that claim to be big fans of the musician on stage, too. Here's an example... Several years ago my Wife and I went to see the Bottle Rockets at Off Broadway. We got there kinda late, no seats available of course, so we stood around near the stage. The band was playing their hearts out at about 120 decibels but there was one group of women right next to us who were talking even louder! When one of them kept standing right in front of me as she hollered at her friends I finally said "We're here to listen to the band, if you don't care about them why don't you go outside to talk?" She was not happy, but did move away. It was John Horton's wife. Fortunately, she later turned out to be really nice.
