That was good, I would have stayed for his show.

Tonight, my wife and I along with some friends will be in the pit down front to see the man in the black hat: Lucky bastard. That should be awesome.

Steve Earle is playing the ArtsCenter in Carrboro on June 10 in support of his Townes album. The ArtsCenter is pretty small and it would be a great place to catch him...but he's charging $39 for the privilege. I'm not paying that to hear him play someone else's songs and trot out his tired old stage banter.

I'd probably do it, but then spend the rest of the week grumbling, "I can't believe I paid $39 to hear him play someone else's songs and trot out his tired old stage banter."

It's not like I'm rolling in dough but $39 is cheap for a show. I'm paying $40 to see Wilco which is a bargain in my book. I paid $40 to see Steve Earle in the 3rd row and it was worth every penny...even with the banter.

Last time I saw him solo, tickets were $15. That seemed about right. Especially since, based on my experience, there's a 1 in 3 chance that he'll be phoning it in.

Can't remember what I paid to see him the last time but it was more than $15. It was a good show, but he did admonish the crowd for being intoxicated (he was playing in a club/bar). He told them that he bet they could find a cheaper place to drink. Not sure what set him off as I didn't notice anyone participating in any over the top jackass behavior - folks just having fun enjoying the show. He recently played in Vancouver BC where I usually go for shows (closer to me than Seattle). When I saw Guy Clark last Saturday night I talked with some folks who were at the recent Vancouver show and they said it was good. They said he had a DJ with him but it worked well . I am looking forward to seeing Steve Earle next month at the Pete Seeger 90th birthday show.

Yeah, the $15 ticket was about 4 years ago at the NC Art Museum summer concert series...they're usually able to keep ticket prices pretty low. The downside of that is that now it's fixed in my brain that it shouldn't cost more than $15 to see Steve Earle ;D

Justin just charged $15 last month, and he'll never be that cheap again.

Of course that was like a couple of weeks after they got married and they hadn't relocated to NYC yet, so their ticket prices didn't reflect their cost of living increase yet. Lucinda Williams tickets earlier that summer at the museum were also $15. They haven't had such a good summer lineup since.

Justin Earle is playing in Hoboken in a couple of weeks but it's the same night as my (roughly) annual trip to the Metropolitan Opera (don't even ask how much those freaking tickets cost) so I'm going to miss it. I wonder if Steve will make the trip across the river to see his boy...

You can't beat $15...even if he is phoning it in. I saw him at Summerfest for the price of admission which was $10 during the Transcendental tour. It was outside on beautiful summer day. The beers were going down and he definitely was not phoning it in that day.
