It's great fun listening to the tracks with the notes from the 'main' website as a guide. The only song I could really live without is 'On The Corner Of I Love And You', but I knew that before anyway. I actually like that one, as a perverse genre exercise. I agree. I was working backwards alphabetically through the list yesterday. It seemed to get imported in that order, which meant the first song was "You Were Never Lonlier" which seems like a fine opener. I stopped before "On the Corner of I Love and You", but just because I wanted to start there today.

I like 'Walk Hard', but I have to admit I think the movie guys chose the better option.

"I Say Hang Him" Kurt Weill and Tom Waits had a monstrous baby.

Sorry - Just started listening to my copy.
Not that Robbie's version isn't great, but wouldn't you love to hear Lyle Lovett sing "It Was Love That Ruined Me"?

If anyone wonders about Arthur Koestler's eyes, here they are:

Sorry - Just started listening to my copy. Not that Robbie's version isn't great, but wouldn't you love to hear Lyle Lovett sing "It Was Love That Ruined Me"? That's interesting - the one consistent thought I've had in listening has been that the songs sound crafted for other people - yet at the same time, they have a unique Fulksness about them. It's taking me days to get through the whole set in the car - a journey to work and back gets me through about 7 or 8 songs in each direction.

Perhaps no-one else is going to say it, but it's not nearly country enough for me. There are some really good pop tunes and it's all very listenable and packed with great ideas, I'd just like to have heard a bit more pedal steel.

Still, looking on the bright side, 'Stolen' is one of the best songs Robbie's ever written.

Have you heard "Every Night About This Time" by Dave Alvin? He wrote it when he was a Nashville hack, and George Jones' camp expressed interest, but it was ultimately rejected because it was "too country." Dave has said that he wants that on his tombstone: "Wrote a song that was too country for George Jones."

Caked Joy Rag with Robbie Gjersoe is becoming a favorite and Danny Barnes' harmony on Church in the Wildwood is as smooth as a well worn church pew.

And when the summer fades We'll slap on some black eye shade And we'll tip our hats to ol' Hank for keepin' it country
"Blaze of Ugly"
Robbie seems to have called the Fountains of Wayne Hotline at least a few times during the past year or two.

I don't know that song, but that is a cool story ;D It's worth looking up, but be sure to get the version off King of California and not Romeo's Escape. Come to think of it, if memory serves, Romeo's Escape is actually titled Every Night About This time in the UK. If that is the case, avoid that one.
