I'm confused about why grain is bad. Rice and oats have nutritional value and are a source of fiber. And they tend to show up on some of the high end dog food, including Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul, which will prolly be my next purchase if I can EVER FIND IT. But I can see why grain should be the 3rd or 4th ingredient, and not the first. It's official. My dog eats better than I do.

I recommend buying the dog food with the highest ash content you can find. Anything over 40% is good.

I've heard that the gluten in the grains sometimes causes some dogs allergies.
I'm no expert but I think that you would want a food that is made up of more meat per ratio than grain, but then again I know someone who is a vegetarian and so is their dog...go figure.

The most common allergens in dog food (and for humans) are wheat, corn, soy, milk, and eggs. Skin problems like itching can often be cleared up by removing these items from the diet.
Most cheaper dog foods are loaded with grain fillers -- usually corn. My mutt Angus itched himself raw when I first got him. Took him off of grains -- no more itching.
Grains aren't bad in themselves. Just as with humans, some are more sensitive than others.
IMHO it's the poor quality of protein and the presence of grain in commercial cat foods that creates kidney problems in so many older cats. But that's a guess.
I did hear tell of a couple of hippies in Ithaca that tried to make their dogs vegetarian too. The dogs became remarkably good at killing woodchucks.

Probably not many of you know who Tom Scharpling is, but on his WFMU show last night he did a very nice tribute to his dog, Dogmo, who died last week. A bit difficult to listen to at times because of the raw emotion, but very sweet: wfmu.org/flashplayer.php?version=2&show=31596&archive=52684It starts just after the 6 minute mark.

I totally can relate to not recognizing how old our pets are. Digler, until he started breaking down, didn't look old to me and in my mind I just figured I had five or so more years with him.
