I'm anxious to saunter into the house tonight like a dog with eyes that say,
"Where's my Big Mac, bitch?"

I was frustrated yesterday because, forseeing her disdain for the new dry kibble, I bought a can of what looked like human grade canned food (buffalo, venison, brown rice, salmon, carrots, peas, potatoes, and apples) to mix in with it. But when I mixed it up and set it in front of her, she didn't like it. Arrrgh! But today, the problem resolved itself. I bought a can of her favorite Purina One Salmon and Brown Rice wet food to mix in with her dry, and she ate good. I don't mind mixing a couple of tablespoons of canned food in with her better quality kibble it makes her eat it happily. I just wanna get her to eat - and enjoy - a better grade of food.

Biscuit took a fall and hurt her hind leg, and I'm afraid it may be a torn ligament in her knee. If she has to have surgery, I won't be able to afford it. I don't know what I'll do if she needs medical care I can't give her. I'm hoping if I get her started her on glucosamine right away, that and nsaids will get her through it. She goes back to the vet in a week. The worst part of it is, she was doing so much yesterday (the initial injury was on Sunday), then she re-injured it on walk when I happened to be looking away from her and she went to chase a rabbit and got jerked back by the leash. I'm afraid that made everything exponentially worse. Anyone else ever have a torn knee ligament issue with their dog?

Okay, I'll shut up about Biscuit. I just thought, it being a common injury, someone might have some experience to share.

No no, don't shut up about Biscuit! I am so sorry she was hurt. I haven't had a torn ligament issue with a doggie. You'll know in a week, right? It's REALLY hard to keep an active dog inactive. It's even harder to keep their people from worrying.
Smooch to you and the pooch.

I'm not sure if it was ligament damage, but the vet recommended expensive surgery. My brother (I guess he was factoring in the 3 daughters he will soon be putting through college) opted to forgo surgery. At first, I thought he was being too cheap. The dog limped horribly for a while, but... Last time I saw her, she was jumping around and running just fine.

I never had a dog with a torn ligament but I have a husband who experienced a serious sprain recently (he rolled his ankle) and the doctor said the best thing is to immobilize it for as long as possible. He did not follow what he figured to be impractical advice and it appears to be healing slowly as a result. I don't know how you immobilize a dog leg. I suppose it's worth asking the vet if he could do something like that--way cheaper than surgery if a splint is a real option. If you don't have the money, you don't have the money.
If Bisky gets a cast, make it an art cast like the one Kelli had!

Sorry about Biscuit's injury. Haven't had any ligament injuries here (thank Christ for that small favor), but we've had various sprains or pulled muscles over the years. Mathilda was limping a little as we started yesterday's walk and probably slightly twisted her front right ankle tearing around the yard. She seems fine today, but I'm still keeping her off all exercise except going out to potty for at least a few days -- that's first and foremost what the vet always orders. As close to total rest as possible, and with ligaments, it's often many weeks of rest, I think. If the vet decides surgery is necessary, definitely get a second opinion and/or do some Internet research. Some vets are more aggressive and others more conservative about invasive procedures -- I like my vet's fairly conservative approach, but YMMV. This is just some dog owner's website rather than a professional source, but as long as you're properly skeptical of anecdotal yata-yata and ax-grinding on sites like that, they can be useful.

My favorite thing! 8:00 pm - Wow! Watched TV with the people! My favorite thing! 11:00 pm - Sleeping on the bed! My favorite thing!
Excerpts from a Cat's Daily Diary...
Day 983 of my captivity...
My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects. They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while the other inmates and I are fed hash or some sort of dry nuggets.
Although I make my contempt for the rations perfectly clear, I nevertheless must eat something in order to keep up my strength.
The only thing that keeps me going is my dream of escape. In an attempt to disgust them, I once again vomit on the carpet.
Today I decapitated a mouse and dropped its headless body at their feet. I had hoped this would strike fear into their hearts, since it clearly demonstrates what I am capable of. However, they merely made condescending comments about what a 'good little hunter' I am. Bastards.
There was some sort of assembly of their accomplices tonight. I was placed in solitary confinement for the duration of the event. However, I could hear the noises and smell the food. I overheard that my confinement was due to the power of 'allergies.' I must learn what this means and how to use it to my advantage.
Today I was almost successful in an attempt to assassinate one of my tormentors by weaving around his feet as he was walking. I must try this again tomorrow -- but at the top of the stairs.
I am convinced that the other prisoners here are flunkies and snitches. The dog receives special privileges. He is regularly released - and seems to be more than willing to return. He is obviously retarded.
The bird has got to be an informant. I observe him communicating with the guards regularly. I am certain that he reports my every move. My captors have arranged protective custody for him in an elevated cell, so he is safe. For now ..

This is just some dog owner's website rather than a professional source, but as long as you're properly skeptical of anecdotal yata-yata and ax-grinding on sites like that, they can be useful. my father is a veterinarian and is conservative on this front. Good friends of mine have an older dog who had some ligament damage on a back leg. Their local vet recommended expensive surgery, but it didn't seem right to them. I called my Dad and he over the phone recommended against. His main concerns were the dog's age, and a dog is pretty much going to blow out his/her other leg because it is very hard to keep them laid up for an extended period of time. My friends then drove the 90 miles to see my Dad and four years later Alex, who is slowing down for sure, is doing just great. My Dad put her on some drugs and a strict diet of Eagle brand food so she could drop a few pounds. Alex, now, also gets carried upstairs every night to go to bed in the master bedroom. A good set up for sure. Very conservative and very efffective. Alex is on the left

Thank you all SO much for your comments - I can't begin to tell you how much better you've made me feel. I don't know if the vet will even recommend surgery, but if so I'm going to forgo it, or at least put it off to see if she can heal on her own. The first thing I did this morning is get online and buy some Synflex liquid glucosamine so I can get her started on that right away. That seems to be one of the safest, most effective steps I can take right now. Luckily, since I switched her over to better food, she's dropped a couple of pounds and is at a perfect weight. I think if I restrict her activity to 3 or 4 short potty walks a day and keep her from jumping on and off the bed, she'll eventually heal alright. Thanks so much for your support, guys. You know how insane I am about my dear little red wolf.

I'm sorry to hear about Bisquit. I have an old dog with some old and new injuries. We've been giving her Synovi G3 soft chews and she has done miraculously well. My dog is sixteen though, and we have had to take her in for two blood tests to make sure her liver was doing ok on the meds. Use with caution.

Thanks, Kelli. I'm encouraged by the success stories I've read/heard about the use of glucosamine with omega 3s and other added ingredients. I've ordered Biscuit some Synflex, which seems to be the most popular brand on the market. It's in liquid form, which is the most recommended way to take it since it gets into the system faster. I'm trying to decide whether to continue with her antiinflammatory scrip because there are some risks involved with that med. But I'm going today to pick up a scrip for a very safe opiate-based pain killer with a mild sedative effect that'll make it easier to keep her rested.
